2.2. Using Alternate SMTP Port

A number of Internet Service Providers try to force you to use their mail server to send out email.  Some of these ISP's, in forcing you to use their mail server, also force you to use the email address they gave to you rather than your domain name email address.

Dynamic Net, Inc. has set up a mail server for you running on port 2525 instead of the normal port 25.  While we cannot guarantee the steps below will work with your ISP, we've had customers have success doing so.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  While the instructions below are for Outlook Express and Outlook, any email program that allows you to alter the outgoing mail server (often called SMTP server) port will work with the concept described below.

Microsoft Outlook Express Instructions

First, click on Tools, Accounts.

Then click on the Mail Tab, select the mail account you want to modify, and click on Properties.

Then click on the Servers Tab, and make sure you have your outgoing mail server set up to be "mail." your domain name.

Then click on the Advanced Tab, and change the Outgoing Mail (SMTP) from port 25 to port 2525.

Then click on Ok, then click on Close, and you are now set to send out email over the alternate port.

3. FTP

3.1. FTPES - FTP over Explicit TLS/SSL - secure FTP

SYMPTOMS:

Plain FTP is not secure enough.

RESOLUTION:

If your FTP client supports FTPES - FTP over Explicit TLS/SSL, just change the setting in your client.

We do recommend FileZilla which is free and supports FTPES.

When you connect via FTPES you may see the below certificate (which is ours and is ok to accept):

FTP Certificate

Depending on your FTP client you may see something like the above.  Please note this is our certificate; and you will see dynamicnet.net in the common name of the certificate.

Click on OK to proceed with your FTPES secure connection.

4. Web

4.1. Site without SSL when using https goes to another site

SYMPTOMS:

Sites using a Shared IP address have noticed that when they change from http:// to https:// and they don’t have an SSL and they add an exception to allow a connection to an unverified SSL, it redirects to another website on sharing that same IP address.

RESOLUTION:
Go to the hosting account of the domain apache selects as the domain in this case and add a .htaccess file and simply put:

Options +FollowSymlinks

RewriteEngine on

rewritecond %{http_host} ^domain.com [nc]

rewriterule ^(.*)$ http://www.domain.com/$1 [r=301,nc]

Where domain.com is the site that you want it to redirect back.

4.2. How to force every site visitor to use https SSL

SYMPTOMS:

Site visits can use http and you want everyone visiting the site to use https (SSL)

RESOLUTION:

Create or edit the html document root (domain name folder) .htaccess file and add the following entry:

## force SSL
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} off
RewriteRule (.*) https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI}

4.3. .htaccess Restrict rewrite for certain folder

In the .htaccess file with your rewrite rules. Ignore rewriting a certain folder:

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !(.*)/foldername(/?)$
